Whale Interpretive Center

For those of you without sea legs, you can still get a whale experience by visiting the Whale Interpretive center. The Interpretive center, inspires, promotes and preserves an awareness of whales and marine life in Cape Breton. This center also has a large tank with live, small marine creatures, for example lobsters, different types of crab, starfish, etc. Also feast your eyes upon "Hook", a life size model of a pilot whale, with a chance to see real live whales from the binoculars on the patio.

Gampo Abbey

The abbey is a Buddhist Monastery which offers limited tours through their main quarters and grounds, for all who wish to visit and learn more about their culture and way of life. They also have a large monument dedicated to world peace, this Stupa is made with white marble and real gold leaf, it has a descriptive write up, so even if you miss the tours, you can still enjoy this beautiful monument.

Timmons Folk Art Studio

This local artisan creates unique hand crafted whimsical works of art, mainly made from wood. If you want something truly original to Cape Breton, look no further. Available by chance or appointment.


Local hikes include MacIntosh Brook, a short hike along the riverbank over some bridges to the waterfalls. It also has a picnic area and small playground. The Lone Sheiling is also close by and is a nice walk through old growth forest and past a replica of a Shepard crofters hut.

The Cape Breton Highlands National Park has over 20 hikes for people of all activity levels, with beautiful scenery and wildlife encounters, each hike has its own beauty and features. The most famous of all, is the Skyline Trail, after walking through the woods, you find yourself on the boardwalks that traverse the top of the mountain to arrive at the end, to fantastic views of the Cabot Trail and the Gulf of St Lawrence, (look for whales as you stop for lunch). Keep your eyes open for moose, bear, rabbits eagles etc as you wander along the trail.

Horseback Riding
