Hiking
There are plenty of trails open to the public and many recreation areas to explore. Beginning with the Kootenay Plaines, a protected area for wildlife and the home of the beautiful Siffleur Falls. Abraham Lake, created by the construction of the Big Horn Dam is another point of interest. Ram Falls, Pinto Lake, Shunda Mountain and Coliseum Mountain all have excellent hikes with spectacular views of the valleys beyond. From the David Thompson area you can even hike across to the Mountain Parks (Jasper and Banff). Near the hostel shorter trails take you along peaceful creeks to beaver dams and quiet picnic spots.

Recommended Hikes

  • Baldy Mountain (8km 3 - 4 hours) This is the round topped, ?baldy? mountain you saw from the highway as you drove to the Hostel. (Coming from Hostel) Head back towards highway 11 and take your first sharp left. Continue straight on this road until coming to a parking lot and trail head sign. There is only one road on the Baldy road. Do not turn right at the intersection or you will end up in the Nordegg subdivision. The steep and rocky hike on the fire road is 4km from the gate to the top, and is well worth the view. It takes 1.5 to 2 hrs to reach the top where there is fire lookout.  Don't bother going up on a rainy or very overcast day, as the view will not be as spectacular.

  • Coliseum Mountain (17km Full Day)This is the first mountain you saw on your right as you drove in with a cape on it.  There is a NEW trail head for this trail. Coming from the Hostel and heading back towards highway 11. Take your first sharp left and then your first right. Follow this orad till the very end, where a parking lot and trail head are clearly marked. The first part of the hike is an actual trail and is marked by flagging tape. Eventually this trail meets up with the old trail, which is a quad path width or bigger. At this point you will head up on a trail that does many switchbacks. The trail is pretty much in the trees all the way until reaching near the top. Eventually you will reach what is called "False peak" where you can look at Baldy Mountain. This is not the end of the trail if you wish it not to be. The next part can be a little sketchy for young children or in bad weather conditions, take this part slow and be aware of snow covering or loose rocks. The trail is mostly scree in the shape of a half bowl. It eventually takes you to the coliseum part of the Mountain. You take the same trail to get back down.

  • Crescent Falls & Bighorn Canyon This hike is 23km west of Nordegg. Turn right at the Crescent Falls sign on the highway & drive either to the top of the falls or park at the turnout and walk along the canyon to the falls. This is a very easy walk and family friendly. Just keep in mind not to get too close to the canyons edge and be aware of loose rock or dependent on weather, ice. Bring a lunch and enjoy the picnic area at the top of the falls.

  • Siffeur Falls (14km  Full Day) Drive about 45min. or 62 km west of Nordegg towards the Banff Park Boundary. The trail head is marked as Siffleur falls on the highway just across from the Kootenay campground. There is a large parking lot with a clearly marked trail head. Go across the bridge and take a right staying on top of the canyon. The trail should be near the canyons edge but safe enough not to worry about slipping. There are 3 sets of falls on this trail. The first one is about 4km or an hour, the greatest distance is in-between the 1st falls and the 2nd and the trail may be not in good shape. Hiking to the first set of falls is a popular family hike.
