Meeting our goals!

Protecting Banff's breathtaking scenery and Canada's entire natural heritage starts with each of us. Here at the HI-Banff Alpine Centre we've developed a waste sorting system to ensure that we continue to reduce our impact.

Last year, we set ourselves a goal to reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill by 20%, primarily by redirecting recyclable or compostable materials that were finding their way into the waste stream. Through the combined efforts of both our staff and our guests, our waste stream audits have indicated that we met and are consistently meeting this goal.

The initial setup expense and ongoing staffing expense of managing this program is significant, but well worth it considering the results. We continue to complete our waste stream audits regularly and will continue looking for ways to improve our results. We hope that you will help us continue this success by taking advantage of our waste-sorting system.

The economic realities are such that there isn't a lot of extra money to spare for programs such as this. Should you be interested in making a financial contribution towards sustaining the program and future environmental initiatives, we are introducing an optional donation collection to our online booking engine. All donations collected will be kept separate from general revenues and will be directed towards specific environmental initiatives.

Whether you've stayed here before or are new to the hostel, once you get here you'll realize that it is extremely important that we all work together to help reduce our ecological footprint.
